RED DEER- The RDC Indoor Track team performed extremely well at Running Room Grand Prix #2 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre. Both the Kings & Queens earned first place and there were many solid individual performances, including personal bests.

The Red Deer College Kings Basketball team played hard and placed sixth at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Championship in Camrose.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week:

Kings Basketball | ACAC Championship | U of A Augustana

The Red Deer College Kings gave it their all and several student-athletes had their best performances of the year, earning sixth place at the ACAC Championship.

The Red Deer College Kings defeated the Concordia University Thunder 95-76 on Friday. Fifth-year guard Spencer Klassen scored 24 points.

“Personally, got my first playoff win,” reflected Kings Head Coach Darren Graham. “We got a playoff win against the team I coached previously, assistant coached with Concordia, and that was a big win for the boys, and we had some really great performances from veteran players.”

In the fifth place game, the Lethbridge College Kodiaks picked up a 105-96 win over the Kings. Klassen contributed a team-high 27 points was named an ACAC Championship Tournament Second Team All-Star. Anthony Harper had 15 points and seven boards.

“Anthony played his best basketball in the tournament,” said Kings Head Coach Darren Graham. “I thought the guys played some of their best basketball at the end, so that’s what you’d like to see as a team.”

RDC Indoor Track | Running Room Grand Prix #2 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Kings & Queens took top spot at the second grand prix of the season. RDC Head Coach Kari Elliott felt the first ACAC Indoor Track Grand Prix ever hosted at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre was a success.

“The times were good. It was a great competitive experience. The athletes were happy,” she said. “The venue hosted brilliantly and there was enough room for spectators.”

Queens’ Shayla Sklaruk (1:38.30) led the pack in the women’s 600 metre final by over four seconds and it was a personal best time.

In the women’s 4 x 200 m relay final, the RDC Queens (1:56.62), consisting of Shaelyn Moltzahn, Sandra Garcia-Bernal, Bobbie Osborne and Shayla Sklaruk, earned first.

Caroline’s Stephen Rowley (2:42.41), of the Red Deer College Kings, came out on top in the men’s 1,000 m final.

RDC’s Devin Saunders (9:16.00) led the ACAC men in the 3,000 m and it was a personal best.

“We are really pleased to come out for the second meet and be as strong as the first. Individually, some personal bests,” explained Elliott. “To have a bit more of a fuller representation from across the conference, it was a bigger challenge and I think we met it on home turf.”

The ACAC Indoor Track Championships will take place from March 21-22 in Edmonton. Concordia University will host the event.
