Rebels buck Broncos 4-3 in overtime

Mar 8, 2020 | 12:07 PM

Ben King scored the overtime winner as the Red Deer Rebels edged the Swift Current Broncos 4-3 in overtime Saturday night at the Westerner Park Centrium.

The Rebels scored first 4:52 into the game when Josh Tarzwell came into the zone and was able to use two Swift Current defenders as a screen, ripping as shot top corner over the glove of Broncos goalie Issac Poulter. His team-leading 30th goal of the year came on the first shot of the game for Red Deer.

The Broncos tied it 3:01 into the second period when D-Jay Jerome put a shot on net that Rebels goalie Ethan Anders wasn’t able to haul in. The puck dribbled out where a waiting Aiden Bulych slammed it in.

Red Deer retook the lead when Ben King made it 2-1 just 2:44 later on a set up from Arshdeep Bains.

The game was knotted up again at 9:59 of the second period by Sergei Alkhimov, who stepped into the Rebels zone and from the top of the circle and fired a laser that Anders couldn’t get a piece.

Red Deer made it 3-2 with less than a minute left in the second period when Tarzwell walked into the zone and shot the puck through the legs of a defender and pas Poulter.

After having sustained pressure throughout the third period but nothing to show for it, the Broncos finally broke through and tied the game at three. With 4:54 to play, Hayden Ostir got a hold of the puck to the left of the Rebels crease and put it to the back of the twine for his ninth of the season.

The first minute and a half of overtime was all Red Deer, with them getting plenty of grade A chances to end the game. The Rebels won the game 4-3 after Bains threw the puck on net where King was sitting with his stick on the ice to put it home for the win.

The win snapped a two game losing streak for Red Deer while extending Swift Current’s to 17.

The Rebels begin a two game road trip Tuesday night when the team heads to Medicine Hat to play the Tigers. That game goes at 7 p.m., you can listen to it live on 106.7 The Drive.
