Preliminary inquiry to be held for pair charged in fatal Lacombe shooting

A preliminary inquiry will take place for two people charged in a fatal shooting in Lacombe last December that claimed the life of a young man from Ponoka.

Tyler John Campbell, 27, and Amie Joanne Rogers, 21, both of Lacombe, will see their case return to Red Deer Provincial Court on Mar. 20 to set dates for a preliminary inquiry to determine whether their case has enough evidence to go to trial.

While appearing in court by CCTV from the Red Deer Remand Centre on Friday, Campbell, through his lawyer Michael Scrase, elected a preliminary inquiry with a judge and jury, as has Rogers through her lawyer Maurice Collard. Rogers is not currently in custody.

The pair stand jointly charged with second-degree murder, conspire to commit murder, and robbery with a firearm, while Campbell also faces a count of breach of conditions in the Dec. 15, 2019 incident.

That’s when Lacombe Police Service responded to the Lacombe Hospital where a male was admitted after suffering a gunshot wound. The victim, 20-year-old Jeffery Kraft, later passed away from his injuries.

Police say their investigation determined the victim had met with a female and male acquaintance earlier while driving in the area of northeast Lacombe, when a confrontation occurred. During the confrontation, a gun was fired, causing injuries to the victim.

Following the incident, the victim was driven to hospital, with the suspects fleeing the scene. They were later arrested by Sylvan Lake RCMP.

Over half a dozen supporters of Kraft were also in court on Friday, wearing white t-shirts with Jeffery’s picture on it and the words, “Justice for Jeff.”

Campbell also faces nine additional charges including a Traffic Safety Act count in relation to separate incidents in 2019.
