Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has announced $100 million for the first phase of expansion at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.

Kenney said consultations with residents and members of the hospital community to determine priorities and expectations for phase one expansion.

“Patients and medical staff deserve better,” Kenney said. “They need a world class facility that delivers world class results and reflects the demands that will be placed on this hospital in the future.”

Health Minister Tyler Shandro confirmed that a cardiac catheterization lab will be included in the first phase.

“(The) cath lab is going to be part of the plan,” he said.

Kenney says he has directed the province’s health and infrastructure departments to move accelerate the project as quickly as possible.

“I can confirm that the bottom line is construction work will begin on the expansion and refurbishment of the Red Deer hospital next year, in 2021,” the premier added.

“The people have been heard. This victory belongs to the people of Red Deer and Central Alberta,” said Mayor Tara Veer. “The lives, health and well-being of our loved ones matter most of all, and this vital investment and expansion will help ensure access to crucial health services and improved health outcomes the people of Red Deer and Central Alberta critically need.”
