RDC Queens hockey player investigated for using racial slur during game

Feb 26, 2020 | 4:45 PM

A Red Deer College Queens hockey player was forced to apologize after reportedly using a racial slur towards an opponent.

The incident occurred during a game between the Queens and SAIT Trojans on Feb. 8 in Calgary, with the RDC player allegedly yelling the slur at a SAIT player who is Indigenous.

Davina McLeod, the SAIT player involved in the incident, shared her account of what happened in a post on social media.

“I felt defeated and taken aback for the remainder of the game; someone just used a racial slur aimed at Indigenous people in 2020,” her tweet read in part.

The Queens player apologized to the Trojans after the game and later issued a written apology.

SAIT reported the incident to the Alberta College Athletics Conference (ACAC) who investigated and determined no further action is required.

“There is no tolerance for racism, and the ACAC will continue to create a place where all students, staff, and spectators feel safe and respected,” ACAC CEO Mark Kosak said in a statement. “Regardless of the circumstances, the ACAC in no way condones the racial slur used by the RDC player.”

RDC Athletics Director Diane St-Denis says they do not condone the choice of words used by their player.

“Through its own investigation, RDC Athletics determined an appropriate course of action to include community service for the RDC student-athlete, which will be completed during the next two months,” St-Denis shared in a statement.

Following the incident, St-Denis says student-athletes took part in a discussion about diversity and respect through RDC’s College’s Indigenous Student Services.

The ACAC says it’s currently working on a draft policy intended to address incidents of intolerance during competitions and hopes to have something ready in time for its general meeting this spring.
