The Red Deer College Kings completed the regular season in style with a convincing sweep over the visiting Medicine Hat College Rattlers (25-17, 25-12 and 25-12). Combined with the fact the Kings have won their past ten matches, they enter the ACAC Championship this weekend in Lethbridge on a high note.

“We are playing at a pretty high level especially after today (Saturday),” said Kings Head Coach Aaron Schulha. “So it’s more about getting guys a little more healthy, keeping some guys healthy and just making sure that we’re focused on the right things, preparing for our opponent.”

The Kings (20-4) placed second in the competitive south division with 40 points. Their first championship opponent on Thursday will be The King’s University Eagles (16-8), who wrapped up third in the north with 32 points.

“They are pretty solid. They won a match or two against Keyano and NAIT, who are the top two teams in the north,” stated Schulha. “Know a little about their setter, it’s JJ’s brother. Chris Graham is their starting setter.”

During the regular season, Chris Graham ranked fourth in the ACAC with 8.45 assists per set. RDC setter Tom Wass sat at the top (9.35).

“We played them in preseason and they’re more than capable, so we’re going to have to play well,” said Schulha.

Back on Sept. 27, the Eagles edged the Kings in five sets in non-conference action, but a lot has changed since then, including the development of first-year outside hitter Carter Hills.

Hills, a six-foot-two outside hitter, led the RDC Kings in kills (255), kills per set (3.11), service aces (36) and aces per set (0.44). Six-foot-four Patrik Toze is another key offensive weapon. The RDC Bachelor of Kinesiology student totaled 204 kills and averaged 2.68 kills per set. Fourth-year Ben Holmes brings skill and a veteran presence (135 kills). Middle Mark DeWit had another strong campaign, contributing 139 kills and 33 blocks.

Six-foot-two outside hitter Jayden Hiebert led the Eagles with 324 kills and 3.68 kills per set. Six-foot-four Tanner Piers contributed 218 kills, averaging 2.45 kills per set.

The RDC Kings and The King’s University Eagles will play on Thursday, Feb. 27 at 1:00 p.m. at Lethbridge College.

“If we look after our side, the results should look after themselves,” said Schulha. “If we look after the ball, then we’re a hard team to play against.”

At 3:00 p.m., the Briercrest College Clippers (14-10) and NAIT Ooks (20-4) will meet. The SAIT Trojans (17-7) and Keyano College Huskies (19-5) will follow at 6:00 p.m. Then the host Lethbridge College Kodiaks (20-4) will take on the Lakeland College Rustlers (11-13) at 8:00 p.m.
