Rebels win wild one 7-5 over Tri-City

Often times when you put two young, rebuilding hockey teams up against each other the results are entertaining.

That’s exactly what happened Saturday night in front of a big crown at the Westerner Park Centrium as the Red Deer Rebels outscored the Tri-City Americans 7-5 to pick up their third win in a row.

Fans who arrived late to the game missed out on an eventful start as the Americans scored on their first two shots on goal, the first just 17 seconds in from along the goal line by Jadon Joseph and the second at the 54-second mark from Edge Lambert on a powerplay. Rebels coach Brent Sutter wasted no time in using the hook on Byron Fancy, pulling him in favour of Ethan Anders.

“We had no choice but to pull the goalie at that time. We tried to get something else going and it worked for us but our goaltending has to be better,” Sutter said.

The Rebels then scored on their first shot of the game 1:20 in as Chris Douglas beat Americans goaie Talyn Boyko for his 12th goal of the season.

Red Deer tied the game at the 7:58 mark as Jaxsen Wiebe sped in and ripped home his sixth goal of his rookie campaign. The Rebels took their first lead of the night at 15:56 when Christoffer Sedoff wristed in his fifth goal of the year.

Kyle Masters made it a 4-2 game with his second WHL goal, a powerplay one-timer set up nicely by Douglas, 6:33 into period two.

Tri-City battled back, however, with powerplay goals from Sasha Mutala at 7:48 and 18:00 to make it 4-4.

But on another powerplay, Ben King beat Boyko from the slot with 0.8 seconds left in the middle frame to send the Rebels to the third period with a 5-4 lead.

That lead held up until the 11:18 mark of the final period when a turnover behind the Rebels net by Anders allowed Booker Daniel to score into an empty net for a 5-5 tie.

With 1:38 left to play and the Rebels on the powerplay yet again, King scored on another one-timer for his second goal on the night and 17th of the year.

Josh Tarzwell added a long-distance empty net goal in the final minute to put the wraps on the 7-5 win.

“It was a little but of a runaway game —high scoring. We had a really big goal on the powerplay near the end for the sixth goal. It was nice to pull through,” said Douglas, who finished the game with a goal and three assists. “These games are always fun, but you have to stay disciplined. Sometimes they get out of hand.”

Sutter was less brimming with his appraisal of the game.

“A lot of goals that I think all three goalies would like to have back. We found a way. You get a power play that you capitalize on at the end of the game.

“Listen, at the end of the day, it’s nice to score a bunch of goals and stuff like that and nice to get the offence going.”

Red Deer outshot Tri-City 38-23 on the night and went 3-for-6 on the powerplay while Tri City was 3-for-7.

The Rebels are back in action Friday, Feb. 28 when the Winnipeg ICE visit the Westerner Park Centrium for a 7 p.m. game. (106.7 THE DRIVE)
