Indoor farmer’s market eyed for Gasoline Alley

Feb 11, 2020 | 12:30 PM

Red Deer County is helping with the launch of a new indoor farmer’s market.

County officials say the move aligns with their strategic priorities after hearing from residents and businesses that an indoor market would be beneficial to Central Alberta.

The county is inviting local producers and artisans to an open house next week to set up their shops.

A new building that will be constructed by a private contractor is proposed for Lantern Street and Leva Avenue and will be just under 24,000 square feet, featuring six kitchens for more opportunities for local vendors and eateries to join.

County Mayor Jim Wood said in a news release, “It will be a tremendous opportunity for local producers and artists to gain access to new customers and showcase the wonderful products we have right here in our own backyard.”

Tara March, Business Development Officer says Red Deer County is acting as more of a facilitator to the endeavor, so there’s no cost associated with the county.

“It’s just in kind as far as helping promote this development,” she says.

March notes that 48 vendors are needed for the project to go ahead.

Red Deer County also hopes this endeavour can kick start more development for Gasoline Alley, which continues to grow year over year.

“We do feel this will be a great asset for the region (and) make Gasoline Alley more of a destination is kind of the intent for Red Deer County, and to support our local producers,” March added.

Shelley Bradshaw of Becks Farms and part of the Innisfail Growers group commented, “This new and exciting market is just another opportunity to help maintain and create important social ties, linking rural and urban populations through items made and grown in this region.”

The indoor farmer’s market would run year-round starting with Saturdays and Sundays only, but could add Fridays if everything pans out, March says.

Producers, vendors, and artisans can attend a free open house at the Hamlets of Red Deer (338 Liberty Ave.) on February 22 starting at 2 p.m. to learn more about the idea.
