Weekend recap: Feb. 7-8

Red Deer- It was another entertaining weekend in Red Deer College Athletics. Both RDC Volleyball teams defeated the Olds College Broncos twice. The Queens Hockey team picked up a pair of wins over the SAIT Trojans. The Hockey Kings split their series with the Concordia University Thunder. The RDC Queens Basketball team earned a home victory against the SAIT Trojans. The Basketball Kings played hard but dropped their games to the Trojans.

Representatives from KidSport were at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre to raise awareness and funds. The 50/50 draw and silent auction raised $1375 for under-resourced youth to participate in organized sport.

Here is a summary of what happened this week:

Queens Basketball | Friday, Feb. 7 | SAIT

The Queens were edged 69-67 by the SAIT Trojans. Harneet Sidhu led RDC with 15 points. Sandra Garcia-Bernal was very effective, contributing 12 rebounds and 11 points.

Queens Basketball | Saturday, Feb. 8 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The fifth place RDC Queens (8-9) played extremely well and earned a 65-43 home victory over the Trojans (4-12). Sidhu had another solid outing, accumulating 17 points. Britney Peters added 12 points.

The Queens have 16 points in the south standings, only two behind the fourth place Lethbridge College Kodiaks (9-8). The Medicine Hat College Rattlers (9-9) also have 18 points, but they are hosting the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Women’s Basketball Championship and are guaranteed a playoff spot.

Kings Basketball | Friday, Feb. 7 | SAIT

The SAIT Trojans took a 97-85 decision over the RDC Kings. Red Deer’s Spencer Klassen totaled 31 points and seven boards. Tyronn King had 23 points.

Kings Basketball | Saturday, Feb. 8 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Kings (8-9) played well and pushed the Trojans (13-3), but they couldn’t topple the visitors (99-93). Off the bench, Kevin Szymanek was tremendous, recording 22 points and ten rebounds. Both Klassen and King scored 26 points. The Kings are fifth in the south with 16 points, only two points behind the Briercrest College Clippers (9-8) and Ambrose University Lions (9-7) for the final playoff spot.

Queens Hockey | Friday, Feb. 7 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Queens blanked the Trojans 1-0. Avery Lajeunnesse scored shorthanded with 35 seconds left in the third period. Karlee Fetch was magnificent in net, making 27 saves for the shutout.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Feb. 8 | SAIT

The second place Red Deer College Queens (14-4-2-0) defeated the SAIT Trojans 2-1. Camryn Wallan and Tessa Ross tallied. It was the first ACAC goal for Ross. Fetch was outstanding again, turning aside 32 shots.The Queens have 30 points in the standings and already sealed a playoff spot.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Feb. 7 | Concordia University

Edmonton’s Mathieu Lapointe scored the game-winner in the RDC Kings’ 3-2 road victory over the Concordia University Thunder. Donovan Lumb and Chase Thudium also struck for RDC. Kings goaltender Arik Weersink made 32 saves (0.941).

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Feb. 8 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Thunder picked up a close 3-2 decision over the Kings (15-5-2-0) at RDC. Lapointe and Ryley Smith found the back of the net. The Kings sit second in the league with 32 points. They have qualified for the postseason.

Queens Volleyball | Friday, Feb. 7 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The Red Deer College Queens defeated the Olds College Broncos in four sets (23-25, 25-14, 25-20 and 25-10). Tess Pearman powered the Queens with 22 kills, five digs, three aces and one stuff block.

Queens Volleyball | Saturday, Feb. 8 | Olds College

The second place RDC Queens (18-2) swept the Broncos (2-20) in Olds (25-19, 25-20 and (25-14), earning their 18th consecutive victory. Pearman led RDC with 12 kills. Emma Holmes contributed seven. The Queens will compete in the playoffs.

Kings Volleyball | Friday, Feb. 7 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

The RDC Kings downed the Olds College Broncos in straight sets (25-15, 25-22 and 25-18). Patrik Toze led the RDC offence with 13 kills. Setter Thomas Wass contributed 32 assists.

Kings Volleyball | Saturday, Feb. 8 | Olds College

The second place Kings (16-4) defeated the Broncos (4-18) in four sets (25-14, 25-19, 23-25 and 25-19). It was their sixth win in a row. First-year Carter Hills had 15 kills. Shae McIntyre added ten. The RDC Kings have already earned the opportunity to compete at the ACAC Championship.
