Olds College hosts athletics scholarship breakfast

Olds College hosted their second annual Broncos Scholarship Breakfast Saturday morning as a fundraiser for scholarships for their student-athletes.

Olds College has 154 student athletes on ten different athletic teams. Eleven of them are international student-athletes from eight different countries.

“The scholarships have helped us bring in better quality talent. We really rely heavily on the scholarships to attract good athletes but more importantly good student athletes,” said Ryan Marsden, the head coach for the Olds College Broncos men’s volleyball team. “Without scholarship dollars it’s really hard to attract the big city folk, the people out of province or, more importantly, the people out of country to come here because we are a small institution. Without scholarships we’d be in trouble.”

“Olds College is proud of our athletics programs and of out student athletes,” said Stuart Cullum, President of Olds College. “Without donors, the parents, or especially the athletes themselves, none of us would have a reason to be here today. We’re here to celebrate the student-athletes.”

The keynote speaker of the event was Neville Wright, an all-around athlete who trained his entire life as a sprinter before the opportunity came up to compete in the Winter Olympic games as a bobsledder. He spoke about his journey and how no matter what, you will face adversity and you just have to overcome.

“I can. I do. I will. It’s a process that I have developed that can be used I any situation in life. When I was faced with adversity, I would say to myself, I can, I do, and I will. That’s the process I came up with. I still had challenges that I had to overcome, but those six words made it so much easier because I would go through the process. When I missed the Olympics by two one-hundredths of a second, I was extremely disappointed. By I re-focused, went through my process and got back to it. I didn’t make it as a sprinter, but I still made it.”

Olds College hands out over $90,000 in scholarships to student-athletes every year and collectively those students carry an average GPA of 2.8.
