Red Deer unemployment rate jumps in January
2020 is off to a brutal start when it comes to local employment numbers.
The latest data from Stats Canada shows the unemployment rate for the Red Deer region jumped to 7.4 per cent in January, up from 6.6 in December and 4.4 per cent in January 2019.
The Alberta jobless rate also climbed from 7.0 per cent to 7.3 per cent as our province lost over 19,000 jobs in January.
Reg Warkentin, policy and advocacy manager for the Red Deer and District Chamber of Commerce says the numbers are disheartening but not surprising.
