Red Deer hosting Canadian Youth Long Track Championships this weekend

Feb 6, 2020 | 11:33 AM

The Canadian Youth Long Track Championships are set for this weekend in Red Deer.

Athletes ages 11-15 from BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will be competing to see who’s fastest in the country.

The event will also give skaters a taste of what national and international competition is like at the more advanced stages. Races include the 300, 500 and 1500-metre events, as well as three and five-lap pursuits.

Two skaters with the Red Deer Central Lions Speed Skating Club will be competing this weekend – James Wigelsworth and Charlotte Murphy.

Red Deer last hosted the event in 2003, but thanks to the 2019 Canada Winter Games and the new facilities at Setters Place at Great Chief Park, our city now has one of the best outdoor skating tracks in the country.

“That has just put us on the map. I’ve been to every facility in Canada and we are the nicest and the best outdoor long track facility,” says Shawna Pearman, meet coordinator.

“The club is very excited to host this event and we are looking forward to hosting many more national level competitions in the future. The weather looks fantastic for fast ice and for volunteers and spectators.”

The event runs Saturday and Sunday and is free for the public to attend. Races will be held 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturday, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday at Setters Place at Great Chief Park.
