List of names for Sylvan Lake WCBL team down to five

Sylvan Lake’s Western Canadian Baseball League team is a step closer to having a name.

For the past two weeks, fans were able to submit names online where the team would pick a list of the top five for fans to vote on in an election. The team says they had 326 names submitted during that span.

The finalists are Gulls, Sailors, Slough Sharks, Sun Peaks, and Whitecaps.

Fans can go to one of nineteen local businesses acting as polling stations throughout Sylvan Lake this month to cast their vote for the name of the team.

Heading into the process, Aquil Samuel, General Manager and President of Baseball Operations for the franchise, said that he wanted a name that is fun, classic and will stand the test of time.

After voting closes on February 28, the team plans to unveil the name and logo on March 15 at a special event for fans. They then plan to launch a ticket drive at the beginning of June.

The team is scheduled to begin play in the WCBL starting in 2021.
