NUMEROUS COMPLAINTS

Authorities deal with ‘nuisance property’ in Eastview

Jan 28, 2020 | 4:19 PM

Complaints from neighbouring residents led to a nuisance property in Red Deer’s Eastview neighbourhood being dealt with by local authorities last week.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, Red Deer RCMP, The City of Red Deer, Alberta Health Services, and Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) responded to the property in what was described as a “coordinated effort.”

The property had been non-compliant with the National Fire Code, Community Standards Bylaw and had been the subject of numerous property crime complaints and other suspected criminal activity.

“Over the last two months we’ve responded to various multiple complaints ranging from suspicious vehicles and persons to persons crimes,” explains Inspector Holly Glassford with Red Deer RCMP.

RCMP say one individual at the property was arrested on an outstanding warrant while another was taken into custody for violating parole conditions. Their names have not been released at this time.

Erin Stuart, the city’s inspections and licensing manager, says it was an accumulation of garbage and animal feces on the property that constituted violations of Red Deer’s Community Standards Bylaw.

No information is available at the time into the nature of the National Fire Code violations cited at the property.

Glassford says it’s important that residents continue to report suspected criminal activity to police.

“It’s important that our community members know that we are tacking these reports about certain properties as a team. Together we hope that we’ll have a greater impact in cracking down on some of these properties that result in multiple complaints to various authorities, not just RCMP.

“We’re better together. When we take a team approach it makes our community safer.”

“Nuisance properties are often connected to criminal activity and by working together with other agencies, we are collectively improving community safety while using enforcement tools that extend beyond the Criminal Code,” added Sergeant Paul Glanville in a release. “The coordinated approach to this particular property was a result of reports and complaints made by the public and we ask that the public continue to report suspicious activity, unusual behaviour and nuisance properties.”

To report suspicious activity or persons, residents can call the Red Deer RCMP non-emergency line at 403-343-5575.

Concerns related to a nuisance property can be called into The City of Red Deer at 403-342-8111.
