Rebels-Hurricanes blood donor challenge coming down to the wire

Jan 27, 2020 | 12:02 PM

The annual blood donation challenge between the Red Deer Rebels and Lethbridge Hurricanes is as close as it gets heading into its final week.

After a significant boost in blood donations in Lethbridge two weeks ago, central Alberta blood donors came through with a strong week of their own with 125 donations on behalf of the Rebels,

In Lethbridge last week, 82 donations were made in support of the Hurricanes.

This brings total blood donations so far in January to 332 for Lethbridge and 331 for Red Deer.

In addition, 26 new donors came forward in Red Deer last week, with nine in Lethbridge. This brings the total number of new blood donors gained in Red Deer this month to 51, with 53 new donors gained in Lethbridge.

“The competition is a fun and engaging opportunity for fans, but take a moment to think about just how many families are feeling the impact of this,” says Marissa Stryker, Territory Manager for Canadian Blood Services in Red Deer.

With only five days left in the competition, Stryker says they’ll need to work hard to get donors in the door, noting 94 open appointments still available.
