The first two businesses are set to open at the Junction 42 rest area near Penhold.

Burger King and Petro-Canada will officially open on Monday, Jan. 27, according to Red Deer County.

Officials say these businesses are the beginning of phase one of the Junction 42 development, located at the QE2 and Hwy 42 intersection, with phase one already containing a “Partner Rest Area” jointly funded by Red Deer County and the Province of Alberta.

Burger King and Petro-Canada are anticipated to be pieces of a Travel Service Centre which will include a bulk fuel cardlock, gasoline and electric vehicle service station, and additional fast service restaurants.

“Red Deer County is extremely proud to welcome Burger King and Petro- Canada to the Red Deer County business community,” says Jim Wood, Mayor of Red Deer County, in a release. “This is only the beginning of a very exciting project for the County. I anticipate a great deal more openings in this area over the next few years.”

County officials note Junction 42 is located just five minutes south of Gasoline Alley, and is slated to be the next major commercial hub on the QE2 corridor.
