Fans to choose name of Sylvan Lake’s new baseball team

Jan 14, 2020 | 11:40 AM

Sylvan Lake’s Western Canadian Baseball League (WCBL) expansion franchise is leaving it up to fans to choose their new name.

Starting January 15 through the end of the month, fans can submit their ideas for a team name through an online submission form.

“What we’re going to do is take those submissions and the leadership team is going to pick the top five that we like and we feel are a fit for us,” says Aqil Samuel, General Manager and President of Baseball Operations for the franchise.

“The top five candidates will be put ahead for an election, and I’ve got various small businesses in Sylvan Lake signed up to be our polling stations. People will be able to come into town and stop by one of these businesses where there’ll be a ballot box set up and the ballots will have the top five names that we choose.”

Samuel says that they want a team name that’s fun, classic and will stand the test of time.

“We wanted to engage the community as much as we could in this process. It’s something we want the community to own for the foreseeable future. We want a name that’s original, that’s fun and something that everyone can be proud of in central Alberta.”

When it comes to overall preparations for the franchise, Samuel says everything is on track for them to hit the field in 2021.

“We’re in full force here. The first phase of the plan was just to get connected in the community and meet as many people and stakeholders as I could. The first grade (ground work) on the stadium is actually done, there is a berm on the location already, that got done before the frost came and then when the spring hits here we’re going to be full force on those plans,” said Samuel. “We’re going to be launching ticket sales June 1. It’s been a fun process and we’re ready to go.”

The team plans to unveil the name and logo on March 15.
