Farmers’ input needed as part of provincial investment research

Jan 12, 2020 | 12:23 PM

A group representing Alberta farmers is urging those in the industry to engage in the provincial government’s feedback process.

Team Alberta, a collaborative made up of Alberta Barley, Alberta Canola, Alberta Pulse Growers, and Alberta Wheat says research is critical to ensuring Canadian farmers can remain competitive.

The UCP government is asking farmers and ranchers to give their input, either through an online survey, or at one of several upcoming meetings:

Lethbridge, January 13, 10 to 2 p.m.
Grande Prairie, January 17, 2 to 4 p.m.
Vermilion, January 21, 9 to 11 a.m.
Camrose, January 21, 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.
Olds, January 23, 2 to 4 p.m.
Calgary, January 24, 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.

“Currently between the four major crop commissions, there is approximately $14.7 million in farmer funding directed toward ongoing and new research projects in collaboration with the Alberta Government,” says a release from Team Alberta.

“Investment in research is a top priority and mandate of the commissions and we commend the government’s intention to develop a farmer-led research model. We believe “farmer-led” should mean a strong collaboration between all key stakeholders — farmers, scientists and government — in determining priorities.”
