lots of chances but...

Rebels blanked at home by Moose Jaw

Jan 4, 2020 | 9:55 PM

It was one of those nights where the Red Deer Rebels piled up scoring chances but couldn’t buy a goal.

Adam Evanoff made 46 saves, including 18 in the third period, to backstop the Moose Jaw Warriors to a 3-0 win over the Rebels Saturday night at the Westerner Park Centrium.

Ethan Anders made his first start in net for the Rebels since Nov. 23.

Neither team scored a goal in the first period. A positive for the Rebels was the fact that they went through the first period without taking a minor penalty, which was a stark contrast from Friday night’s game versus Saskatoon in which penalty trouble gave them a fair bit of grief.

The second period went much like the first with the Rebels holding an edge in play but neither team bending the twine.

The first goal of the game came 26 seconds into period three, just after a Rebels penalty had ended, as Ryder Korczak fired a shot high past Anders for a 1-0 Warriors lead.

Tate Popple made it 2-0 for Moose Jaw at the 6:54 mark.

Warriors goalie Adam Evanoff took it from there as he was superb in holding off the Rebels attack, which was furious at times as they fought to light the lamp.

An empty netter from Popple with six seconds left to play rounded out the scoring on the night.

Red Deer ended up outshooting Moose Jaw 46-24 on the night. Both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.

This is the second time the Rebels have been blanked in a game this season. They fell 5-0 to Portland back on Oct. 11.

NOTES: Rebels scratches for the game were defenceman Kyle Masters (lower body, week to week) and Jace Isley… Byron Fancy had started 11 straight games for the Rebels before Anders returned to action in this one… Former Rebels defenceman Carson Sass assisted on Moose Jaw’s second goal… the Warriors earned their first win since a Dec. 10 OT triumph over Kamloops.

NEXT GAME: The Rebels being a five game road trip on Jan. 7 when they visit the Prince Albert Raiders (6 p.m. on 106.7 THE DRIVE).
