Town of Rocky working to create closer ties with neighbours

It’s all about getting to know each other and working together.

Last Wednesday, the Town of Rocky Mountain House hosted their first meeting between O’Chiese First Nation, Sunchild First Nation and Clearwater County.

“I just decided that it would be great to have a meeting. We’re all neighbours and we need to get together and support one another,” explained Rocky Mayor Tammy Burke.

This was not intended to be a one-off meeting, Burke added, with the hope being to make this a quarterly event.

“Everything happened so quickly, I plan to talk to Bighorn this week and will be asking if we can meet as well, because we’re all neighbours in this beautiful region,” noted Burke.

The first meeting was an informal session to get to know one another and set the stage for later meetings that Burke said she hopes to talk about ways to “make our regions better.”

“I’m hoping we create friendships and partnerships, and if there are concerns any of us have, we can work on them together,” she said. “I believe these talks are long overdue.”

Communications Coordinator for the Town of Rocky Mountain House, Laura Button explained that this is a relatively new thing for the communities.

“In the form of bilateral chats between leadership about how we can work together, it hasn’t happened before in the six years that I’ve worked here.”

These talks of working together and creating closer ties comes amid the possibility of amalgamation between the Town of Rocky Mountain House, Clearwater County and the Village of Caroline.
