Paralyzed dog finds new home

A paralyzed dog that was brought to the Central Alberta Humane Society last week will soon be ready to join her new foster family.

Angel, as she’s been dubbed by humane society staff, was found outside an apartment in Sylvan Lake extremely malnourished and suffering from full paralysis of her hindquarters. She was brought to the humane society for care on Dec. 3.

Since then, animal care manager Shelli Steeves says Angel has put on two kilograms and is doing better.

“We do have a foster to potentially adopt in place and we’re looking to get her into foster care in the next week or so,” says Steeves. “She’s been eating really well, doing really fantastic. Whether or not she could gain weight was definitely a concern.”

“Looking forward into the New Year, we might be looking at getting some MRIs and scans and such, just so we can get a better, clear, defined idea of what is happening with her spine,” says Steeves. “We may never actually fully know (how Angel became partially paralyzed), but we do just want to try our best to see whether or not her condition is just going to remain as it is and ensure it’s not going to deteriorate anymore. There are no defined breaks in any of her bones that you can see, so it’s very likely that it was a birth defect.”

Steeves says their Foster to Adopt program will see Angel stay with her potential foster family well into the New Year to adjust to her new way of life.

“Then we’ll start looking at following through and processing the adoption once we’re complete with any other testing or anything that we may be looking at doing,” says Steeves.

Through Facebook, the Central Alberta Humane Society has raised about $8,000 for Angel’s care.
