World's best curlers

Half the field is set for Humpty’s Champions Cup in Olds

Dec 6, 2019 | 2:41 PM

The town of Olds is preparing to host the Humpty’s Champions Cup, a bonspiel that will bring the world’s top curlers to the community from April 29 to May 3, 2020.

There are still a dozen men’s and women’s qualifying events, though as we near the middle of the curling season, half the field has been set.

Teams qualify for the final Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling of the season in Olds by winning one of the other major events throughout the curling season.

In the men’s division, six of the 12 teams have qualified. There are four Canadian teams including Bottcher, Dunstone, Jacobs and Koe. There is a local Alberta representation in this mix, with Bottcher from Edmonton and Koe from Calgary. The other two teams include Edin, from Sweden and Chang-min Kim from South Korea, both winning their respective regional championships.

The women’s side features a large international contingent with Einarson and Fleury as the only Canadian representatives so far. Tirinzoni from Switzerland, Hasselborg from Sweden and Yu Han from China round out the five qualified teams with seven spots remaining.

The event organizing committee is made up of volunteers from the Olds and Innisfail curling clubs as well as the Town of Olds and community members. The chair, Nancy McInerney, and committee member, Lowell Peterman, have a special connection to the event, their daughter Jocelyn Peterman plays second for Team Jones out of Winnipeg.

The Jones team still has several chances of qualifying, including the two upcoming Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling events in Conception Bay South, NL (Boost National) and in Yorkton, SK (Meridian Canadian Open). Team Jones is currently ranked sixth in the standings.

“We would love to see Jocelyn play in front of a hometown crowd,” says Lowell. “Though we know it’s a competitive field and they’ll have to work hard to earn their spot.”

Ticket packages are 50% sold out and available at www.thegrandslamofcurling.com.
