Sentencing proceedings begin for former Red Deer Mountie convicted of breach of trust

Nov 26, 2019 | 2:39 PM

A Crown prosecutor says a former Red Deer Mountie found guilty of breach of trust brought disgrace upon the RCMP with his actions.

Photini Papadathou made the comments in Red Deer Court of Queen’s Bench on Tuesday as sentencing proceedings got underway for Jason Tress.

He was found guilty in September in relation to his interactions with a young woman while responding to a domestic dispute on May 1, 2016.

Papadathou told Justice David Gates she will be seeking jail time for Tress, and that justice would not be served with a suspended sentence or conditional charge.

Defence lawyer Robb Beeman says he will be seeking a conditional discharge for his client.

The case returns to court on January 7.

Tress, who is now 33-years-old, had been suspended without pay from the RCMP pending the outcome of his criminal proceedings. Court heard on Tuesday that he resigned from the force in October.
