Mounties investigating police shot fired in Kentwood

An internal investigation is underway after a Red Deer RCMP officer’s firearm was discharged last week during a pursuit.

No one was injured in the incident that happened in Kentwood just after 2:30 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 14.

Video shared on Facebook by a nearby resident shows an officer running down the street in pursuit of a suspect. The officer had their firearm removed from its holster and in his hand when a single shot was fired.

Staff Sgt. Jeff McBeth tells rdnewsNOW that the shot was fired into the ground, and that no one was injured.

McBeth says the officer was “pursuing a suspect from a stolen vehicle that was involved in other violent incidents.”

“He would have made a decision that police or the public were in grave danger, hence why his firearm would have been unholstered and in his hand at the time,” he explains.

McBeth says their investigation is looking to determine whether the shot was fired intentionally.

“We are conducting what is called an incident review, which is an internal investigation into what the details are surrounding why the firearm was discharged.”

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT), the province’s police watchdog, was consulted but has chosen not to investigate at this time, according to McBeth.

“There’s no timeline, but we generally treat them pretty urgent,” McBeth says of investigation of this nature. “We want to find out what happened, why it happened and be either able to put the remedies in place or justify why it happened.”

Meantime, the criminal investigation into the activities leading up to Thursday’s incident continues. No charges have been laid at this time.
