Rebels beat WHL-leading Raiders in road trip closer

Nov 10, 2019 | 9:40 AM

Against significant odds, the Red Deer Rebels defeated the WHL’s best team on Saturday in the final game of a six game road trip.

Going into Saturday, Red Deer had allowed the most goals of any team in the league at 74, and sported a record of 4-11-0-2, including three losses in a row. Prince Albert, on the other hand, was 12-4-3-0 before their contest against the Rebels, including a 7-0-2-0 record at home.

The Raiders got on the board first less than five minutes in; Aliaksei Protas scoring his 13th of the season.

It was that way until 8:53 into the second period when Chris Douglas equalized for Red Deer with his fifth of the year, Joel Sexsmith and Arshdeep Bains getting the assists.

Again, it remained that way for another period until Dawson Barteaux scored his fourth 4:22 into the third. That goal came on the powerplay with Bains and Ben King getting the helpers.

Eight minutes later, Brayden Watts tied things up for PA with his tenth, and it came shorthanded.

But just 1:03 after that, it was Dallon Melin playing hero with his second goal in as many games. Rookie Jace Isley got the assist to extend his point streak to two games; on Friday he earned his first career WHL point.

Ethan Anders (5-8-0-1) scored the victory in net for Red Deer making 31 saves on 33 shots faced. He also earned first star honours.

With the win, Red Deer finishes their six game road trip, which took them through Moose Jaw, Regina, Brandon, Winnipeg, Saskatoon and Prince Albert, 2-4-0-0.

They return home this Friday, Nov. 15 for the start of a four game home stand against Medicine Hat. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. They’ll also play Brandon, Prince Albert and Lethbridge.
