Failure of Houston Oil & Gas threatens to create up to 1,400 orphan wells

CALGARY- Alberta’s Orphan Well Association estimates it will cost more than $80-million to clean up wells abandoned by the defunct Houston Oil and Gas.
The association estimates it’s likely to inherit more than 1,400 wells after Houston entered receivership last month.
It already had more than 3,400 wells scheduled for abandonment on its books as of November 1 thanks to a string of recent failures among Alberta oil and gas companies.
The organization steps in when operators of oil and gas facilities can’t or won’t meet their cleanup obligations.
