Weekend recap: Nov. 1-2

RED DEER- This past weekend the Hockey Kings defeated the Concordia University Thunder twice.

Both basketball teams earned victories over the St. Mary’s University Lightning in Calgary.

The RDC Queens Hockey team split their series with the MacEwan University Griffins.

Proceeds from the 50/50 draws at both the Hockey Kings and Queens’ home games went to the Canadian Cancer Society.

Here is a summary of what happened this past week in RDC Athletics:

Queens Hockey | Friday, Nov. 1 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In a defensive battle, the MacEwan University Griffins edged the Queens 1-0. Karlee Fetch made 17 saves for RDC.

Queens Hockey | Saturday, Nov. 2 | MacEwan University

The second place Red Deer College Queens (5-1-0-0) defeated MacEwan University (7-1-0-0) by a score of 4-2, handing the Griffins their first loss. RDC’s Tyra Anderson, Avery Lajeunnesse, Carissa Hogan and Brooklyn Rowley found the back of the net. Queens goaltender Karlee Fetch had a great game, making 39 saves.

Kings Hockey | Friday, Nov. 1 | Concordia University

The RDC Kings handled the Concordia University Thunder 5-1. Chase Thudium had a pair of goals. Scott Ferguson, Ross Heidt and Kyle Salaway added singles in the road win. Kings goaltender Arik Weersink made 29 saves.

Kings Hockey | Saturday, Nov. 2 | Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre

In a rematch, the first place Kings (6-1-1-0) earned a 4-2 victory over the Thunder (2-4-1-1). Trevor Costello, Scott Ferguson, Jacob Wozney and Tyler Podgorenko scored for the Kings. Arik Weersink was outstanding and made 32 saves in the win.

Queens Basketball | Friday, Nov. 1 | St. Mary’s University

In Calgary, the RDC Queens (2-1) defeated the St. Mary’s University Lighting (3-3) by a score of 76-60. Sandra Garcia-Bernal contributed 15 points, 13 rebounds, one assist and one steal. Amy Szymanek led RDC with 22 points.

Kings Basketball | Friday, Nov. 1 | St. Mary’s University

The Red Deer College Kings (2-1) earned an 82-80 road win over the St. Mary’s University Lightning (2-4). Reno, Nevada’s Jouvon Edison scored the winning bucket and was named the Kings Player-of-the-Game.
