Red Deer College Athletics is proud to announce the Bedford Food Company Athletes of the Week.

Shayla Sklaruk – Queens Cross Country Running
Hometown – Stony Plain, AB
Bachelor of Education Elementary (2nd year)

Sklaruk had a tremendous race at the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference (ACAC) Cross Country Running Championships in Calgary on October 26.

The talented runner from Stony Plain led the Queens to a silver medal. Individually, Sklaruk (24:42) earned bronze over 6 km in a very competitive field.

The Bachelor of Education Elementary student was also named to the ACAC Women’s Cross Country Running All-Conference team.

Sklaruk, along with the Queens and Kings, will participate at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Cross Country Running National Championships in Grande Prairie on November 9.

Turner Johnson – Kings Soccer
Hometown – Red Deer, AB
Academic Upgrading (2nd year)

Johnson had an excellent weekend for the RDC Kings at the ACAC Men’s Soccer Championship in Sherwood Park, helping his team earn a silver medal.

In the quarter-finals against Concordia, the hard-working defender from Red Deer helped limit the Thunder’s offence to a single goal in a 2-1 victory.

Johnson had an outstanding game against the SAIT Trojans in the semi-finals. He played 120 minutes and scored the Kings’ lone goal during regulation time. After 30 minutes of extra time expired and the teams were still even 1-1, the Academic Upgrading student was successful on his penalty kick, helping the Kings defeat the Trojans and advance to the gold medal game. He was also named the Kings Player-of-the-Game.

The Lethbridge College Kodiaks edged the RDC Kings 2-0 in the finals, but Johnson displayed another solid outing against a talented team.

Johnson and the Kings will compete at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) Men’s Soccer National Championship from November 6 to 9 in Oshawa, Ontario.
