A woman is recovering after she was assaulted at gunpoint while having her vehicle stolen Wednesday morning.

At 8:48 a.m., Sylvan Lake RCMP responded to a complaint from a rural property that two females, believed to be intoxicated, were in a ditch. They were allegedly dropped off by a male driving a truck that had driven through a fence.

The truck, later identified as a 1997 Ford F150 stolen from Rocky Mountain House, was abandoned in a nearby field, on fire. Eckville Fire Department attended and assisted with extinguishing the vehicle fire.

The two women inside that vehicle were confronted by one of the property owners who had driven her SUV, a Dodge Durango, out to meet it and began taking pictures of them.

RCMP say one of the culprits then opened the woman’s vehicle door, pulled her out and began punching, kicking and threatening her before pointing a firearm at her face.

RCMP Police Dog Services, Rocky Mountain House RCMP, and RCMP Air Services were deployed to the location to assist. Two prohibited firearms were located abandoned in the area.

The suspects fled in the Durango towards Red Deer, speeding eastbound on Highway 11 before crashing into multiple vehicles in Red Deer before finally being arrested.

The victim suffered cuts to her eyebrow, nose, ear and hands, and had her upper lip split open.

The victim’s husband tells rdnewsNOW this isn’t the first time they’ve had unwanted people on their property.

“We should have the right to defend ourselves, our family and our property with whatever means necessary, up to and including deadly force,” he said.

Police say a second vehicle, a 2007 grey Chevrolet Silverado, was stolen from a nearby residence and remains missing. RCMP believe the male who dropped off the suspect females stole the truck from an area property.

Charged are 20-year-old Brianna Crookedlegs and 27-year-old Chelsea Crowley. Each faces nine counts including robbery and eight firearms-related counts and one for robbery. Crowley also faces five additional counts for breach of recognizance.

Both are due to appear in Red Deer provincial court on Monday.
