Melisa McIntosh and Sian Milner received the George Award for taking the lead on planning many of the school’s special events and supporting students and staff.

The two educators continually strive to ensure that MicroSociety is a remarkable experience for all students.

Allan Baile, the 2019 recipient of the HEART Award, the longest, most respected award given in the international community of MicroSociety Schools is the coordinator at Aspen Heights’ MicroSociety.

Under his guidance, the elementary school has out-competed high schools and universities throughout Canada for their environmental work.

Known within their school as the Super Six, Gemma Gould, Raylin Jones, Addyson Higgins, Fatama Fadlalah, Stephanie Paje, and Brielle Brattson make up a group of students who have been recognized with the Student Leadership Award for taking on the role of Environmental Stewards who care for the school’s animals, fish, and plants on days when MicroSociety is not running.

They have also taken initiative to educate fellow students and guests about the environment and to provide fresh local produce for students who do not have access to it on a regular basis.

Today, (Oct. 16) the Aspen Heights MicroSociety is celebrating the awarding of International Recognition to staff and students for their Outstanding Achievement in 2018-2019.

MicroSociety International created its STAR System to recognize member schools/programs that demonstrate a high commitment to academic standards, student empowerment and leadership, innovation and community engagement.

Results are compiled from a lengthy survey, telephone interviews and on-site observations and assessment. Acknowledged by peers, parents and students for their exemplary contributions to the field of innovative education, STAR schools are recognized and celebrated at the MicroSociety Conference annually.

The George Awards were a major highlight of MicroSociety’s 27th Annual International Conference, which took place this summer in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
