More losses, more trades for Drayton Valley Thunder

Oct 15, 2019 | 11:32 AM

The Drayton Valley Thunder dropped a pair of games over the Thanksgiving Long Weekend and now see their winless streak sitting at five games.

The Thunder lost a close 3-2 game to the Fort McMurray Oil Barons at the Omniplex on Friday. They then fell 6-2 to the Sherwood Park Crusaders on Monday.

The losses drop Drayton Valley’s record to 3-8-1 on the season.

Meantime, the Thunder to continue to reshape their roster through trades, including one consummated on Saturday that saw them acquire forward Matthew Byrne from the Powell River Kings of the BCHL

“During acquisition times, there are countless hours spent combing through available players, and could-be available players,” explained General Manager and Head Coach Eric Thurston. “We know what fits in our room and into our structure and it is not always easy to find. Matthew sees the ice so well, skates hard and is so good at generating offence.”

To make room for Byrne and the return of Jacob Charko to their lineup, the Thunder traded Brock Bartholomew to the Amherst Ramblers of the Maritime Hockey League, and Anthony Vidrick to the Kirkland Lake Gold Miners of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League.

Bartholomew recorded seven points in 54 games with the Thunder last season and was held pointless in four games this season.

Anthony Vidrick, who is from Ohio, did record a point in nine games this season with the Thunder.

Up next on the schedule for the Thunder are games Friday at home versus Canmore (7 p.m.) and Sunday versus Okotoks (2 p.m.).
