Rebels destroyed 9-1 by powerhouse Tigers

Oct 13, 2019 | 9:46 AM

It was not a pretty night for the Red Deer Rebels who were scored on three times in each period while on the road Saturday in Medicine Hat.

The lone bright spot came early as Josh Tarzwell scored 1:48 after the opening puck drop, but his 5th of the season was actually an equalizer. The Tigers’ Daniel Baker had potted his 2nd of the year only 33 seconds in.

At 4:06, Baker got his second of the night, and Caleb Willms made it 3-1 at the 12:46 mark.

In the second, Tigers captain James Hamblin scored his 5th while shorthanded, then Ryan Chyzowski got his 6th on the powerplay. Cole Sillinger also got his 6th before the period was out and it was 6-1 headed to the third.

Early on, Sillinger scored again, and it seemed like the tide had mercifully been stemmed, but Medicine Hat poured salt in the wound with two more goals in the final three minutes of play.

Medicine Hat outshot Red Deer 40-20 on the night and went 2/5 on the man advantage. Red Deer was 0/1.

Ethan Anders (6 GA) and Byron Fancy (3 GA) split the duties in between the pipes for Red Deer. Mads Sogaard got the win for the Tigers.

James Hamblin had one goal and two assists, and Daniel Baker, Caleb Willms and Cole Sillinger — all rookies — each had two goals and one assist.

The Rebels have now dropped two straight after winning three in a row, and have a record of 4-5-0-0. In their two most recent losses, they’ve been outscored 14-1, including a 5-0 defeat at the hands of Portland at home on Friday.

The Rebels return home on Friday, Oct. 18 to start a four-game home stand beginning with Edmonton. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. from the Westerner Park Centrium. 106.7 The Drive will carry the broadcast starting at 6:30.
