Red Deer unemployment rate rises to 8%

RED DEER- The unemployment rate for the Red Deer area climbed to 8% in September.

That is up from 7.3% in August.

The Alberta rate for last month was 6.6%. That is a drop from 7.2% in August.

Nationally, the unemployment rate fell from 5.7% in August to 5.5% in September thanks to gains in full-time work.

Statistics Canada reports the economy added 54,000 net new jobs.

The growth was largely concentrated in the health-care sector and there was also a rush of new positions in service industries.

Compared with a year ago, the numbers show the economy added 456,000 jobs, for an increase of 2.4%.
