Murder trial begins for father charged in death of young son

EDMONTON- A trial began Monday for a man charged with second-degree murder in the death of his 19-month-old son.

Joey Crier, 28, has pleaded not guilty to second-degree murder in the death of Anthony Joseph Raine, who was found dead outside the Good Shepherd Anglican Church in April 2017.

A Crown prosecutor told court that the father was violent with the child.

Allison Downey-Damato said she will show that Crier and his then-girlfriend, Tasha Mack, were Anthony’s primary caregivers in the months before he died.

She said the abuse became more severe in the weeks before the boy’s death and he was isolated from all other people by Crier and Mack.

The trail is being heard by a judge without a jury.

It’s expected that 30 witnesses will be called over the next three weeks.

Tasha Mack, is also facing trial separately on a charge of second-degree murder, with final arguments set for next month.
