Rebels win streak at three after dispatching Tigers

Oct 6, 2019 | 9:59 AM

The Red Deer Rebels are now winners of three in a row following a 4-3 overtime victory in Medicine Hat on Saturday night.

In that stretch, Red Deer has outscored its opponents — Medicine Hat, Swift Current and Saskatoon — by an 11-5 margin. The Rebels never trailed Saturday at the Canalta Centre, but did allow the Tigers to claw back from three one-goal deficits.

Scoring got started just past the 15 minute mark of the first, Jaxsen Wiebe notching his first of the season. Trevor Longo (1st) tied it only a minute and four seconds into the second.

Barely two and half minutes later, Brett Davis (4th) scored on the powerplay to regain the lead, veterans Chris Douglas and Dawson Barteaux picking up the assists. It wasn’t until the midway point of the second that Ryan Chyzowski got his fourth of the year, and things were knotted at two goals apiece.

Before the period was out, Red Deer’s powerplay struck again, this time Ethan Sakowich earning his second goal this season at 19:24.

Things were looking decent for the Rebels as the game approached the 13 minute mark of the third period, but then they got called for having a hand on the puck in the crease, setting up the most exciting play in hockey; the penalty shot.

Tigers captain James Hamblin went glove side on Anders and things were tied at three with overtime looming. In the extra frame, Chris Douglas sealed the deal for the Rebels with his third, and it only took 38 seconds.

Ethan Anders made 39 saves for the victory, while Mads Sogaard stopped 17 pucks. Anders was named first star of the game for the second night in a row.

The Rebels, who now sport a 4-3-0-0 record (including 3-1-0-0 on the road), return home Friday for a date with the Portland Winterhawks. Puck drop is at 7 p.m. with the broadcast on 106.7 The Drive starting at 6:30.
