Hospice expansion nearly complete

The $5.2 million expansion to the Red Deer Hospice is nearly complete, on-time and on-budget.

Val Hilario, Expansion Campaign Coordinator for the Red Deer Hospice Society, says they will take possession of the expanded area next week and hope to have residents in the new rooms by November 1.

“It’s really exciting. It means 100 more residents each year can receive care that we are able to provide for those already here,” she said Wednesday.

The expansion includes six new beds, enhanced family lounges and quiet areas, as well as multipurpose rooms for community programming.

While work on the expansion is nearly complete, fundraising for the ambitious expansion has a ways to go.

“We are still fundraising and will be for a period of time,” Hilario explained. “We’ve got half of the $5.2 million raised, so we still need 2.6 million. These are hard times in the community, we know that.

“We know that it will come, but it is something that we’re going to be at for a bit longer.

“We’ve got some excellent donors from the boy down the street with his lemonade stand to bigger business supporters. We’re very excited by everyone who’s embracing what we’re doing.”

The Red Deer Hospice Society has a Ted Talk-style fundraiser taking place on Oct. 25 at Bo’s Bar and Stage.

On Wednesday, they received a donation of $1,556 from Lacombe-based restaurant Cilantro and Chive. They teamed with Matt Hamill of Red Shed Shed Malting to donate $2 to the hospice for each ‘Burger of the Month’ sold at the restaurant during August.
