RCMP are urging local drivers to slow down in school and playground zones after issuing 154 tickets, including 111 for speeding during their annual back to school safety blitz last week.

“Speeding is a serious safety issue in Red Deer every day of the year, and these numbers really demonstrate that,” says Sergeant Mike Zufferli with the Red Deer RCMP Traffic Unit, in a press release. “The RCMP presence around schools is a reminder to drivers to follow posted speed limits and pay attention to the road, and we’re actively targeting speeders and distracted drivers.”

According to local Mounties, two distracted drivers were also ticketed during the campaign, in addition to one driver for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, one learner driver for driving without a supervisor, and one motorist for passing a vehicle in a school zone. Four seatbelt violations were also issued.

Further to slowing down, Red Deer RCMP are also reminding students and other pedestrians to use crosswalks and traffic control devices when crossing streets.
