Head-on crash with police vehicle results in serious, life-threatening injuries for ATV driver

Sep 3, 2019 | 3:27 PM

A head-on collision between an ATV and police vehicle in Red Deer Tuesday morning has resulted in serious, life-threatening injuries.

In the late night hours of Sept. 2, RCMP say members observed an ATV, a motorcycle and a car driving carelessly and at high rates of speed through parking lots and city streets. Mounties say several calls were also received about these vehicles being driven erratically.

According to RCMP, officers attempted to isolate the incident but at no time pursued the vehicles involved due to public safety concerns.

At approximately 12:15 a.m. on Sept. 3, Mounties allege the ATV which was travelling at a high rate of speed, struck a police vehicle head on at the intersection of Taylor Drive and 67 Street.

The male driver of the ATV is said to have suffered serious, life-threatening injuries during the crash and was transported to hospital via EMS, then flown to Calgary via STARS. The RCMP officer suffered minor injuries and was released from hospital a short time later.

Red Deer RCMP along with an RCMP collision analyst remained on scene for several hours and continue to investigate but no charges have been laid at this time.
