still more to win

Thompson wins one title, chases two more

Aug 26, 2019 | 6:18 AM

One down, two to go for Parker Thompson.

The Red Deer racing pheon is celebrating having won the GT Sport class title for the Canadian Touring Car Championship.

This despite missing the final two races of the season due to a scheduling conflict with Indy Pro 2000.

With another month still left in the racing season, Thompson has his sights set on winning bot the Indy Pro 2000 and GT3 Canada circuits.

“When we teamed up with Speedstar Motorsport and New Roads Automotive Group earlier this year to take on the Canadian Touring Car Championship, I knew that we were embarking on an exciting journey. Having never raced a car with fenders and a roof before, I had a lot to learn,” Thompson shared.

“That said, we had the highest expectations for the season. The fact that our group managed to lock up the series championship with two races still remaining, indicates a job well done! We won seven of eight races, but it certainly did not all come easily.”

Thompson says his season has included many exciting challenges that have allowed him to showcase his versatility.

“From learning a new car, on tracks new to me with the added chaos that multi-class racing breeds, I was able to gain some great experience that will help my career going forward.”

A highlight for Thompson was taking part in his first night race, a rainy event at Trois-Rivieres, Quebec.

“On the start I took the overall lead, and was controlling the pace until one of my competitors misjudged a brake zone. In one of the craziest moments in racing that I have ever experienced, the overall race leader and two class leaders all came together, forcing the retirement of three leading cars.”

With two championship series left to complete, Thompson has three race weekends remaining on his schedule, starting with the Grand Prix of Portland this coming weekend in Indy Pro 2000.

That will be followed by an IP200 event September 20-22 at Laguna Seca, California, and a September 27-29 GT3CAN event at Mont-Tremblant, Quebec.
