Canada Post asking residents to be mindful of dogs when carriers show up

Canada Post would like residents to take more precautions when it comes to the prevention of dog attacks on postal carriers.

Melissa Bustamante, a long-time mail delivery person in Red Deer, and now supervisor at the local plant, says one bite is too many.

“We know dogs are part of people’s lives. I have a dog myself, they’re a big, important part of everyone’s family,” she acknowledges. “Dogs are very territorial and protective of their house and everyone inside of it. When I think of my dog , he’s a good boy and he’s great to us, but he still has those canine instincts.”

Bustamante points out that dog bites can happen out of the blue, noting the one instance she was nipped involved a dog coming from the backyard of a neighbouring house from where she was delivering mail.

“When we come to the door, they have their job to protect the house,” she says. “Our carriers don’t mind waiting a little bit while people lock up their dogs or put them in another room to sign a parcel or retrieve whatever mail we’re knocking on the door about.”

She adds that while it’s an inconvenience for the mail carrier who is bitten or scratched, these incidents also contribute to longer wait times at walk-in clinics and hospitals. Injuries also mean they have to involve WCB.

According to Canada Post, approximately 41 per cent of Canadian households have dogs.
