Following months of hard work, approximately 400 Grade 4-6 students from eight Red Deer Public Schools gathered at Lindsay Thurber High School on Friday to participate in a Coding Quest Arcade.

Red Deer Public School officials say Coding Quest is based on provincial curriculum where using a critical inquiry process, students learn fundamental coding skills and create a video game through what is described as an engaging, student-driven program.

Coding Quest is said to focus on STEM education (Science, Technology Engineering, Mathematics), 21st Century and computational thinking, while incorporating learning skills, science & technology, mathematics, language arts, visual arts and social studies with the arcade being a culmination of the program.

Participating schools included Aspen Heights, Barrie Wilson, Don Campbell, Gateway Christian, Glendale, GW Smith, Mountview and Oriole Park.
