Initial concept design unveiled for Blackfalds rink expansion

Apr 13, 2019 | 1:19 PM

Renderings for the proposed multiplex expansion in Blackfalds are finally being revealed to the public.

This comes after the local Dual Ice Development Society (DIDS) held its largest fundraiser to date earlier this month, collecting just short of $40,000 to put toward its million dollar goal.

Images from the initial concept design show the future multiplex, the ice surface, lobby, dressing rooms and offices alongside a brand new library.

Currently, the project is proposed as two phases, with the rink being done in 2021 ($15 million budgeted), and the library in 2024 ($4 million budgeted), though that could change.

“Council may want to push it up to get it started,” says Sean Barnes, Director of Community Services with the Town of Blackfalds. “The way the economy is right now, maybe we can get some cost savings.”

Barnes estimates savings could amount to 15-20 per cent if pushed up, and council could also decide to do the library at the same time as everything else.

Up next is an open house at the Blackfalds Multiplex on April 17 from 6:30-8 p.m. More renderings will be available at that time.

From there, the Town will take feedback received to council, DIDS, the rec board and the library, before potentially hosting another open house.
