Sheraton rebranded as Cambridge Hotel & Conference Centre

The Sheraton Red Deer as we know it is no more.

Now, at the corner of Gaetz Avenue and 32 Street, is the Cambridge Hotel & Conference Centre.

The change comes after ownership decided to cut ties with the Sheraton brand. The new name takes effect today (April 1).

“This unique property is the premiere conference facility in Central Alberta, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to provide an exceptional experience to all of our guests as the newly rebranded Cambridge Red Deer Hotel & Conference Centre,” says Gordon Johnson, Vice-President, Operations, Atlific Hotels, which manages the building.

“It has a long history of hosting some of the most distinguished events and guests in the region, and we are excited about what’s next as we embark on this new chapter in its successful story.”

The building was originally built in 1961 as the Capri Motor Hotel.

In 1964, it was purchased by the Pasutto family, who kept the name. However, in the 1970s, the family changed the named to the Capri Hotel and Convention Centre, according to historian Michael Dawe.

In 1981, more renovations were done including the addition of a 14 storey tower.

In 2002, Delta bought the property and began rebranding, but by 2003, it had reverted back to being under control of the Pasuttos.

It was in 2008 that the building was sold to Temple Hotels for $40 million, and it remains owned by that company to this day. Twelve million more in renovations and the hotel was later converted into the Sheraton in fall 2011.

A spokesperson confirms there will be no changes to management or staff, and operations will continue as they were.
