Raiders push Rebels to brink of playoff elimination

The Red Deer Rebels are on the brink of playoff elimination.

The Rebels fell 4-2 to the Prince Albert Raiders Tuesday night at the Westerner Park Centrium. The Raiders now lead the best of seven WHL Eastern Conference Quarterfinals series 3-0 and will go for the sweep Wednesday night.

“Unfortunately, we weren’t even close to how we played in P.A., tonight, and that’s too bad,” Rebels GM/head coach Brent Sutter lamented. “I expected more from the group here tonight. We just never got to the level of play you need at playoff time from a lot of guys in the room.”

Prince Albert took an early 1-0 lead when Noah Gregor intercepted a Rebels pass and beat goalie Ethan Anders for a breakaway goal 1:09 into the first period.

The Raiders pulled ahead 2-0 on another outstanding individual effort as Dante Hannoun collected a loose puck then went to coast to coast before ripping a shot by Anders for a shorthanded goal at 13:22.

Brandon Hagel, as he has done so many times this season, provided the Rebels with a much needed spark when he put home his own rebound past Raiders goalie Ian Scott for his fourth goal of the series 4:37 into period two.

It remained a one goal game, thanks in large part to Anders, until late in the third period when Gregor, as he did to start the game, pounced on a Rebels turnover for his second goal of the game with 3:15 remaining.

Reese Johnson made it interesting when he scored on a rebound, his first goal of the series, with the Rebels net empty and 1:02 left to play.

But as they tried for the tying goal the Rebels coughed up the puck at the Raiders blue line and Parker Kelly skated in for an empty net goal with 18.5 seconds left.

“Not very good, obviously,” Sutter said of his team’s play, bluntly. “We spent a lot of time chasing. We never had much of a forecheck at all. They’re a good team but you’ve got to get after them.

“I didn’t like our forwards at all tonight. There was no urgency at all to get in there and battle and compete.

“There just wasn’t enough urgency in our game, especially in the first two periods.”

Anders, easily the best Rebels player on the night, finished with 38 saves. Scott turned aside 14 of the 16 shots on goal he faced for the Raiders.

“Andy stood on his head. He played outstanding for us,” Sutter noted. “(But) when you get only 14 shots on net, or whatever it was, you’re not winning the hockey game. And then you give up 40 plus, it wasn’t a great outing by us.”

“I didn’t think it was our best game at all,” Johnson added. “We came out flat and in game three of the playoffs that’s unacceptable.”

Game four of the series goes Wednesday night at the Westerner Park Centrium at 7 p.m.
