Alberta flu deaths stagnant through month of February

Mar 3, 2019 | 11:01 AM

Despite zero Albertans dying from the flu in the entire month of February, Alberta Health Services still says you should get your shot.

The fortunate streak of no fatalities goes back even further to Jan. 17 for the Central Zone, where there have been just nine all season.

There have been 28 province-wide.

“The influenza that is circulating this year has largely been determined to be one of the common strains, Influenza A, but we will not be able to comment on the effectiveness of the vaccine until the season is over,” says Mohammed Mosli, Medical Officer of Health for the Central Zone.

“So far, it’s looking like it’s providing very good protection.”

Flu vaccination campaigning will continue on through the month of March.

Mosli adds it’s important people remember that the vaccination is free of charge.

Cases of the flu (both A & B strains) provincially went from 5,149 at the start of February to 5,464 as of Feb. 28, an increase of 6.1 per cent. Between Nov. 29 and Jan. 3, cases went up 92 per cent from 2,412 to 4,634.

In the Central Zone, the number of cases increased just under nine per cent in February. In the same previous stretch from Nov. 29 to Jan. 3, they went up 262 per cent.
