Province unveils ‘lost-revenue counter,’ says $6B lost to Trans Mountain Pipeline delay

The Alberta government is launching what it calls a real-time lost-revenue counter to show how much Canadians are missing by keeping energy resources landlocked.

The government says in a release that the counter will be displayed digitally at locations near Parliament Hill in Ottawa and backed up by various advertisements that will run nationally.

The province estimates that more than six-billion dollars has been lost across the country since the Federal Court of Appeal ruled in August against the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion.

It says the current oil price differential illustrates why new pipelines are urgently needed.

“From Day 1, we’ve been fighting for Trans Mountain. Under Premier Rachel Notley’s leadership, more Canadians than ever before support this project because they know we shouldn’t be selling our products on the cheap,” says Economid Development Minister Deron Bilous.

“There’s too much at stake. We will keep the federal government’s feet to the fire so that this project isn’t delayed any further.”

The province says seven in ten Canadians are now in favour of the Trans Mountain Pipeline expansion, up from four in ten earlier this year.
