Man arrested in weekend carjacking and armed robbery of cab driver

A 21-year-old man has been arrested following two armed robberies with an imitation handgun in Red Deer over the weekend.

According to RCMP, the first happened around 3:30 p.m. on November 3 when Mounties responded to a report of a carjacking where two men posing as potential buyers of a victim’s truck, stole the truck during a test drive.

Police say the suspects had the victim take them to the McKenzie Trails Recreation Area where they displayed a supposed handgun, robbed the victim and stole his truck.

The victim was not hurt and RCMP recovered the stolen truck in the Oriole Park neighbourhood early the next morning (Nov. 4).

RCMP obtained surveillance images of the suspects and began working to identify them.

At 6:30 a.m. on November 4, Mounties responded to a report of a robbery after a taxi driver was robbed at gunpoint by a male suspect.

Staff Sergeant Jay Peden confirms there were no shots fired. The GIS unit and Police Dog Services were utilized, but a suspect was not initially located.

However, RCMP say excellent descriptors and more surveillance images obtained by officers soon identified the suspect and linked him to both incidents.

The suspect was located at a residence in Inglewood and was taken into custody without incident.

Police seized the weapon — an airsoft gun — alleged to have been used in both robberies.

RCMP say the man faces numerous charges, but his name cannot be released at this time as those charges have not yet been sworn before the courts.
