County allocates $250,000 in grant money for community organizations

Red Deer County council has given the go-ahead to allocate a quarter of a million dollars in grant money to over a dozen community groups within the county.

During its regular meeting Tuesday, council approved a recommendation to award funding from the Rural Community Facility Capital Assistance Grants to 16 community organizations.

Grant allocations include $35,000 to the Cottonwood-Gordon Agricultural Society for the addition of two gender-neutral handicapped washrooms and to expand the foyer at Cottonwood-Gordon Hall, $5,880 for the Pine Lake Hub Centre Community Association to cover installation of a new security system and cameras, $2,775.76 for the Poplar Ridge Community Center to cover a pressure tank replacement and drywall repairs due to the pressure tank failure and $23,268 for the Spruce View Community Association to cover the costs of updating the kitchen to Alberta Health standards.

Others include $38,232.34 to the Balmoral Community Hall for painting, flooring, a furnace, air-conditioning unit, hot water tank, reverse osmosis unit, stove, cooler, sink, and range hood, $18,790  for the Cumberland Community Club to remove and replace the ball diamond back stop and installation of two new team bench shelters, $1,389.45 to the Stephan G. Stephannson Icelandic Society for Fensala Hall to cover the cost of a new dish sanitizer and roof gutter guards and $49,445.84 to the Ridgewood Community Hall  for a new kitchen to meet health code. That project includes flooring, cabinets, a counter top, work table, appliances, plumbing, electrical, and the painting of all walls and doors.

Further grant allocations include $9,700 for the GlenEllen Community Centre to install a 20’ x 20’ picnic shelter, $9,167 to the Golden West Drop-In Centre in Spruce View for painting and new lights, $19,231.43 for the Linn Valley Community Hall to repave the basketball/tennis court, fix court fencing and install new gates at the courts, as well as $1,990 to the Oklahoma Community Centre for the purchase of soccer goal posts.

In addition, $12,623.91 will be doled-out to the Willowdale Community Centre for the purchase of a replacement cooler, 100 used banquet chairs, new carpet and flooring, eaves trough replacement and to re-do the hall ceiling. The Little Red Deer Community Hall will receive $6,850.00 to strip old prime paint and for the application of new exterior paint. The Kevisville Ball Diamonds Association will receive $9,921.27 for the purchase of a used C-Can, used bleachers, used mower, gravel, fencing, a flag pole and gates, while the Benalto Booster Club Society will receive $5,735 for the Benalto Train Station to install new flooring in the old basement entry, a kitchen installation, supplies and furniture and outside cement cladding.

Each year, rural community facilities are eligible to receive between $1,000.00 and $100,000.00 in funding for capital projects involving maintenance and upkeep. The grants are paid out upon Council’s approval.
