Women’s shelter hires new executive director

Oct 19, 2018 | 1:00 PM

The Central Alberta Women’s Emergency Shelter (CAWES) Board of Directors has appointed a new executive director.

Rayann Toner brings with her over 13 years of knowledge and experience working in the field of social justice and intimate partner violence.

“We’re exceptionally pleased that Rayann has taken on this leadership role,” says CAWES President and Board Chair Janel Lockhat. “Her passion and commitment to our cause coupled with her strong knowledge and experience will be vital as we continue our plans in completing our full transition to Trauma Informed, Low-Barrier-to-Entry Services.”

In 2005, she joined CAWES in the role of Child Support Worker and continued by taking on leadership role in various aspects of Operations and the Domestic Violence Court Program over the 10 years that she has been employed with the agency.

Originally from Trenton, Nova Scotia, Toner was the Executive Director of the Pictou County Centre for Sexual Health from 2010 – 2014.

CAWES officials say she will play a key role in meeting the organization’s outstanding reputation for service and delivery to clients and its peers by working closely with collaborative partners locally and provincially through the Alberta Council of Women Shelters.  Toner has also co- represented CAWES both at national and international conferences for women shelters, in Ottawa and Den Hague, the Netherlands.

“CAWES has a reputation as an inspirational leader in frontline services,” says Toner. “We have a tremendous opportunity to strengthen our work around diversity, inclusiveness, and gender responsiveness by creating a compassionate and empathetic environment, by using our strong business values and trauma informed service delivery to match the demands and expectations of our clients.

“I have always respected the CAWES’ brand, values and proven delivery models, and I am excited to be working with an amazing team committed to exceptional and innovative service in our community.”

Toner replaces Ian Wheeliker, who spent 11 years with CAWES before taking a director position with the Alberta Council of Women’s Shelters.
