Stantec hosts Feed the Need BBQ at City Hall Park

Sep 25, 2018 | 1:50 PM

Those going through tough times in our community stand to benefit from the 6th Annual Feed the Need BBQ held in support of the Red Deer and District Food Bank at City Hall Park on Tuesday.

The noon hour event saw residents come out to enjoy a gorgeous fall day, live entertainment from local musicians and of course some juicy burgers grilled to perfection by staff from Stantec in Red Deer, with both food and monetary donations going towards the food bank.

Fred Scaife, Executive Director, Red Deer and District Food Bank, anticipates 5,000-6,000 pounds of food being collected at the event.

“This time of year, we’re at the lowest point we’re going to be all year long and that’s not unique to this year,” states Scaife. “We’re always low and our cupboards are getting bare this time of year but this is kind of the start to filling those cupboards up and our bank account too which is down by about 40 per cent this year. But you know what? That’s this time of year, it’s going to get better and I’ve got all the confidence in the world.”

Scaife says there are lots of opportunities for the community to help them if they can, in addition to Stantec’s BBQ.

“Saturday, if you live in north Red Deer, we have the Mormon Helping Hands Food Drive,” Scaife adds. “You know you’re going to be part of the food drive if you get a plastic bag delivered to your door. Then on Sunday, we’re out at the airport for operation food lift, so it’s a busy week.”

Scaife points out that what the food bank does is a needed service in our community.

“I think our city knows that,” says Scaife. “We’ve never really been in a position where we’ve been hurting badly for donations and when we have, all I’ve had to say is ‘we need this’ and this amazing, wonderful city and its people come through.”

Stantec Promotions Specialist Courtney Avram says Tuesday’s BBQ is part of their company’s world-wide Stantec in the Community Week.

“Every office that is a Stantec office is hosting some kind of event where they give back to the communities that they belong to,” she explains. “One of Stantec’s mission statements is that we design with community in mind and a part of designing with community in mind is being able to live, work and give back to the communities that we are building. So because most of our staff live and work in Red Deer, we want to help those that are a little bit disenfranchised in our society and build them up while we’re also building our community.”

Avram says their annual BBQ fundraiser has helped raise over $30,000 for the food bank over the past five years, in addition to over 30,000 pounds of food.

“Today, we’re really hoping to break $7,500 and hopefully close to 10,000 pounds of food,” concludes Avram.

The Red Deer Food Bank’s Operation Food Lift takes place Sunday, September 30 from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Red Deer Regional Airport. Those who donate $25 in cash or the equivalent in food will receive a free flight around the City of Red Deer courtesy of Sky Wings Aviation.
